Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) are community-owned conservation areas that are meant to benefit communities and wildlife. They often fail because they’re unable to provide a living for people.

Healthy African ecosystems, independent people.
Honeyguide helps people put in place a structure for good communal planning and decision-making, then works with them to figure out how to make a good living in a way that protects ecosystems and wildlife.
WMAs in Tanzania are self-sustaining, protect nature, and deliver enduring value to communities.
Conservation only works when people can make a living off the land. Honeyguide has created the playbook for communities to benefit from wildlife tourism and is working to develop carbon projects and other livelihood solutions (a huge need in the conservation sector overall). They’re now engaged with 13 WMAs across 2M hectares in Tanzania—super ambitious, but we believe they can make it work. Cracking the code on conservation-aligned livelihoods will be a huge contribution to the movement.
