Protect and increase farmer incomes.
Kheyti designed an affordable greenhouse for smallholder farmers that increases crop yield, diversity, and income, and guards against climate change induced shocks. They install the greenhouse and provide ongoing agronomy services, teaching farmers how to optimize yield for the new product and find the best markets for produce.
Indian smallholder farmers double or triple their incomes by growing high-value crops in affordable greenhouses. Governement subsidizes the greenhouses —like they do for other farm inputs—and there is a competitive market of for-profit businesses supplying quality greenhouses at low cost.
There are few viable ways for farmers to escape poverty, especially in the context of climate change. Greenhouses are an important solution—they’re water efficient and offer potential for more crop cycles—with a big income boost. Broad uptake will require a subsidy, which the Indian government offers for other products, like fertilizer, that benefit smallholders. Kheyti had a policy breakthrough and is piloting a government subsidy in three states. Success could unlock resources for a big uptick in the number of greenhouses installed.
