Indoor air pollution—mostly from cooking with wood and charcoal—is a leading cause of premature death. The stoves that can make enough of a difference are too expensive for poor people to buy.

Eliminate indoor air pollution from cooking.
Ecosafi (Better Cooking Company) uses a fuel-subscription model to flip the equation that has plagued the clean cookstove industry: They give people the best stove on the market, then sell them the pellets to fuel it (at a cost less than charcoal). Each stove comes with a contract to buy a certain amount of pellets from a convenient location. If they're willing to sign up for additional subsriptions, families can get as many stoves as they want.
Poor households use high quality stoves and buy clean fuel at a price point less than charcoal.
Ecosafi has developed the cleanest, most efficient biomass stove on the market and a revolutionary business model that gets it to the people who need it most. They've manged to bolster their bottom line with solid carbon credits and are already getting requests to license their stove for outside Kenya from entrepreneurs looking to launch similar businesses. Even better, if this goes big it could make charcoal and its ravages a thing of the past.
