Save lives in remote places.

How It Works

These community health workers are recruited from their communities and trained to address a broader range of conditions than the traditional volunteers. They are integrated into a larger supervisory system, certified as health professionals, and paid a regular salary. Well-supervised and supplied, they provide quality healthcare to people far from clinics and hospitals.

The Dream

Professional Community Health Workers become an integral part of government primary health care systems across Africa.

Why We’re In

Community health workers are a critical piece of the universal primary-healthcare puzzle. Last Mile Health was one of the original innovators in the professionalized model, and have emerged as a leader in what has become a movement to drive broad adoption by governments. They went from a small project in Liberia to the creation of a countywide program run primarily by the Ministry of health. There is now a substantial body of evidence for the impact of “proCHW” models in many settings, and Last Mile Health has established substantive scaling partnerships in three more African countries.
