Roughly a third of the world’s coral reefs lie in the Pacific, and are now near collapse from overfishing and climate change. Yet coastal communities can still protect their most productive marine areas—and improve their livelihoods in the process.

OneReef helps communities manage their reefs in a way that taps into traditional stewardship practices. They co-design spatial management plans alongside communities, including best practices like no-take zones. At the same time, they bring in cutting-edge geo-spatial tools for monitoring reef health and take a modern approach to enforcement, which includes enlisting government support for communities as rangers and protectors.
Community-based organizations across Pacific Island Nations adopt and deliver OneReef's model, paid for by philanthropy and government, so the most productive reefs thrive.
This is a highly replicable model—already reaching 1.45M acres of coral reefs across three countries. This solution taps into existing community demand and aligns with the national interests of small Pacific nations. They have some promising evidence of ecological recovery but need more rigor. We have confidence this can work in a lot of tropical settings if OneReef can effectively train others to do it. An exciting signal that this is possible has been the launch of the Oceania Collective—a group of seven like-minded local, indigenous steward NGOs—that are working together to exchange best practices and replicate this model in Polynesia and Melanesia, with the ambitious goal to 20x the current reach!
This is just a snapshot of what we know about the organization. If you're an investor or funder that might send some serious dough their way, we're always delighted to share more. Reach out and we'll connect you with the right person on our team.
