Err educate girls — they have the perfect name.
Educate Girls does exactly that: educate girls in India. They saturate districts with low female enrollment to shift cultural norms and get girls in school and learning. Over the last decade, their hallmark program, Vidya, has enrolled 1.4M out-of-school girls and ensured they stay and learn by organizing a massive community volunteer teaching effort to boost learning outcomes in grades 3–8. They launched a new program to help older youth (age 15+) who didn’t finish school get their 10th grade credential (equivalent to a U.S. GED) to access better job and education opportunities.
A future where every girl in India is enrolled in and stays in school, learns, and gains credentials that lead to economic opportunity.
Educate Girls nailed enrollment and retention. They have promising learning gains too. They’ve transitioned their work to government in their first district, and are on track to prove they can do it at scale and that the impact endures—we’re optimistic. Their new program, Pragati, envisions virtual schools to help older girls complete basic education degrees. It's early but could be a game-changer if it unlocks new income opportunities.
