Get out-of-school kids back on track.
The Luminos approach is a ten-month program of intensive schooling with active teaching and learning that gets kids aged 8-14 caught up and back into mainstream schools. Out-of-school kids are equipped with foundational literacy and numeracy skills with the support of community and public-school teachers. They get back to school, back on track, and even outperform their peers.
Governments deliver catch-up school programs across Africa.
This works and can scale. Luminos has rigorous evidence from multiple studies showing that Luminos kids catch up to in-school peers. It's early in the government scale journey, but Ethiopia has adopted Second Chance in three states that reach 80,000 kids per year, and Luminos is testing “lighter touch” support to governments over time. We’ll learn if it’s simple and cheap enough ($28 per kid in Ethiopia) for governments to deliver without them, but they’re on track to the dream.
