Maliasili

Local communities in Africa live on and traditionally manage about 70% of the continent’s land, yet their rights are recognized on less than 10% of that area. Civil society organizations that support community-led conservation are key to changing this, but they tend to thrive in the field and struggle in the back-office.

The Mission

Thriving ecosystems in Africa.

How It Works

Community-led conservation works—decades of evidence show it protects landscapes and boosts livelihoods. Maliasili helps scale it. They identify critical landscapes in Africa, find high-potential local conservation organizations, then boost their performance by sharepening their strategy and operations. They also evangelize for more funding to go directly to the organizations on the frontlines and have created a pooled fund to to show how it's done.

The Dream

A thriving network of community-led conservation organizations—supported by philanthropy—that protects critical African landscapes while improving livelihoods for the people who live there.

Why We're In

Maliasili takes a long-term, partnership approach to supporting local community-led conservation organizations. It’s the best we’ve seen, and they show no signs of slowing down. They’re also at the forefront of a paradigm-shifting movement to get money to flow directly to local organizations via the Maliasili Conservation Fund and have been gaining real traction.
