How It Works
Semilla Nueva breeds higher-yield, more nutritious seeds—rich in zinc, iron, and quality protein—a win for both kids and farmers. These seeds go to companies that produce and sell them to farmers at scale, often at a subsidy for smallholders.
The Dream
Kids are healthier because governments, seed companies, and farmers all use nutritious, higher-yielding maize as the standard.
Why We're In
Early, rigorous evidence shows nutrition impacts from the maize, a breakthrough proof that the approach works. They made strides toward proving absorption of increased zinc, a technically difficult feat. They reached 30K farmers in total through ten seed companies, unlocked a critical government subsidy in Guatemala, and expanded from Guatemala into El Salvador.
