25% of India’s land exists as a “commons”—territory that is shared collectively. 350M of India’s rural poor depend on them to meet their basic needs, but the forests, pastures, and water in these commons is often degraded.

Conserve village commons in India.
FES has reimagined the tragedy of the commons as the promise of the commons. They help villages secure legal rights to their common land, access government funding, and restore the land productively. It improves both household income and ecosystem health. Their technology products help local government administrators implement and monitor the solution, and create a platform for multiple stakeholders to participate in commons management.
All communities in rural India have secure legal rights over their common land, with government support to keep it healthy and improve livelihoods.
Over decades, FES has seen a 65% increase in tree biomass in degraded landscapes. Progress so far indicates that this could work across 240K villages and 65M acres in India. At a marginal cost of $500/village, it’s cheap, and the government has the money and willingness to pay. They are a national leader in environment and rural development.
