CassVita

Cassava is a staple for smallholders across Africa—climate-resilient, soil-friendly, and in growing demand as a gluten-free starch. There's a big catch, though—cassava rots within three days if not processed, and much of the harvest goes to waste.

The Mission

Boost farmer incomes.

How It Works

Bathing cassava in CassVita's product creates a coating that "fools the tuber into thinking it's still underground." Local co-ops can create simple infrastructure—metal tanks—that will allow them to extend shelf life to 18 months. Freed from the risk of rot, farmers will grow more and buyers will buy more, creating a positive spiral for smallholders.

The Dream

Thrving markets for cassava across Africa

Why We're In

Cheap and simple to use, Cassvita's product could revolutionize the African cassava industry—with big income gains for smallholder farmers. Cameroon and other governments want to reduce reliance on imported wheat, but to prove that cassava can be a substitute, CassVita needs to develop and prove a profitable supply chain They've made a great start with two new processing factories and several partnerships with international food companies.
